The Sydney Beach I Still Think About: A Perfect Family Day at Balmoral Beach, Mosman — With Sushi Afterwards
Some family trips are wonderful in the moment and then slowly fade into memory. Others stay with you.
Our little overnight trip to Balmoral Beach in Mosman was one of those days I still find myself thinking about, even a year later.
Sydney is famous for beaches like Bondi, Coogee and Manly, but Balmoral felt different. It had everything I wanted from a Sydney beach, without feeling like we had arrived at one of the city’s major tourist attractions.
The water stretched out beautifully in front of us, while boats rested quietly across another part of the harbour. There was sand for the children, trees for shade, a playground beside the beach, and even a café right on the water.
For a family with young children, it was almost perfect.
A Sydney Beach That Feels More Local
What I loved most about Balmoral was its atmosphere.
It felt beautiful without trying too hard to be spectacular. There were families, children playing in the sand, people walking along the waterfront and boats sitting peacefully in the harbour.
Compared with some of Sydney’s internationally famous beaches, Balmoral felt calmer and more local.
And perhaps that was exactly why I liked it so much.
We arrived at around 10 in the morning, when the day was beginning to warm up. The children went straight to the sand and water, and we stayed there until well after noon.
There was no need to rush anywhere.
The beach itself was enough.
A Beach Café Exactly Where You Need One
Another thing that made Balmoral so convenient was having The Boathouse Balmoral Beach right on the waterfront.
I have been to beautiful beaches where there is nothing around except sand and water. That can be wonderful too, but with young children, having somewhere nearby to grab a coffee, something to eat or simply take a break makes a surprisingly big difference.
At Balmoral, the café almost feels like part of the beach itself.
You can look out over the water and the boats while taking a short break before heading straight back onto the sand.
It gives the whole beach a relaxed, lived-in feeling rather than the sense that you have travelled somewhere simply to take a photograph and leave.
The Playground That Made Me Love Balmoral Even More
Then there was the Balmoral Beach Playground, set beside the beach in Balmoral Reserve. Mosman Council lists the playground on The Esplanade opposite Plunkett Road.
This may have been my favourite part of the day.
The children could leave the sand, have an ice cream and run around the playground while the beach was still right there in front of us.
Behind and around the playground were large trees providing shade, so we could sit underneath them, look toward the water and watch the children play.
I remember sitting there and thinking:
Maybe this is how children are meant to grow up — running freely, surrounded by beautiful nature, with the sea in front of them and nowhere they need to hurry to.
It was such a simple moment, but it stayed with me.
Beach, playground, trees, shade, ice cream and children running around happily.
What more did we really need?
Of all the beaches we had visited with our children, Balmoral immediately became my favourite.
And Then Came the Sushi
After more than two hours at the beach, everyone was hungry.
We got back into the car and drove only a few minutes into Mosman for lunch at a small Japanese sushi restaurant.
There is something different about eating Japanese food at a place where the food feels genuinely Japanese rather than simply being another generic sushi shop.
We ordered sushi, udon and tempura, and everything tasted wonderful.
Maybe we were especially hungry after spending the morning by the water. Maybe it was simply a very good restaurant.
Either way, I still remember that lunch.
Fresh sushi after a morning at the beach, hot udon for the children, crispy tempura, and everyone tired and happy from playing outside.
It was one of the best Japanese lunches I can remember having in Sydney.
Why I Still Think About This Day
Nothing extraordinary happened that day.
We didn’t visit five attractions. We didn’t follow a packed itinerary. We didn’t spend the day trying to see as much of Sydney as possible.
We simply went to the beach.
The children played in the water and sand. We sat under the trees. They played at the playground. We ate ice cream. Then we drove a few minutes away and had sushi for lunch.
And somehow, a year later, I still think about it often.
Perhaps the best family travel memories are like that.
They aren’t always the biggest trips or the most famous destinations. Sometimes they are simply a few hours when everyone is together, the children are happy, the weather is warm, the food is good, and for a little while there is nowhere else you need to be.
For me, Balmoral Beach is one of those places.
Whenever we return to Sydney, I know there are two things I will want to do again:
Go back to Balmoral Beach.
And have sushi afterwards.
Some places are worth visiting once.
Balmoral is a place I want my children to grow up remembering.
