Celebrating a Birthday at Manly Beach
For my birthday this year, there was one thing I really wanted to do — spend the day by the beach.
Instead of making a reservation at a fancy restaurant or planning anything extravagant, we stopped by Coles near Manly Beach and filled our bags with all kinds of food, snacks, drinks, and, of course, a birthday cake. Then we simply headed to the beach together.
Sitting by the ocean with my family, eating the food we had picked out and watching the waves roll in, somehow felt more special than any luxurious birthday celebration I could have planned.
The moment I remember most was when my five-year-old son started singing “Happy Birthday” to me by the beach. It was such a simple moment, but as I looked at my family sitting together in front of the ocean, I thought, This might be the best birthday I have ever had.
There was no elegant table setting, no expensive restaurant, and nothing particularly extraordinary about what we were doing. We were simply eating supermarket food and birthday cake by the beach. Yet perhaps that was exactly what made it so beautiful.
Even after we came home, I was still so happy and excited that I could hardly fall asleep. It was one of those rare days that leaves your heart feeling completely full.
Sometimes we think a special day needs an elaborate plan to become a special memory. But this birthday reminded me that happiness can be much simpler than that — good food, a piece of cake, the sound of the ocean, and the people you love sitting beside you.
And perhaps Manly Beach doesn’t have to be saved for birthdays or special occasions.
On an ordinary day, when nothing particularly exciting is happening, maybe simply coming here, sitting in front of the sea, and watching the waves for a while is enough to make life feel a little more beautiful.
