Art, Gardens and a Slow Afternoon at Heide
Some places are simply nicer when you can share them with someone who enjoys the same things.
I’ve always loved art, and drawing is one of my child’s favourite things to do. So spending an afternoon at Heide Museum of Modern Art felt like an easy choice for us.
What I liked most about Heide was that it didn’t feel like a museum you had to rush through. There were galleries to explore, but there were also gardens, open lawns and sculptures outside, so the afternoon naturally moved between art and nature.

Taking Our Time with the Art
We wandered through the galleries without trying to see everything.
Some artworks caught our attention immediately. Others we simply walked past.
I enjoyed seeing which colours, shapes and details my child noticed. Sometimes it was completely different from what I was looking at, which made the visit more interesting for me too.
There was no need to turn it into a lesson.
We looked, talked a little, and kept walking.
For a child who already loves drawing, being surrounded by so many different ideas and ways of creating felt special enough on its own.

Wandering Outside
After the galleries, we headed into the gardens.
This was probably my favourite part of Heide.
The museum opens into lawns, old trees and quiet paths, with sculptures appearing here and there as you walk. It feels less like leaving the museum and more like the art simply continues outside.
We wandered without much of a plan, stopping whenever something caught our eye.
It made the whole visit feel relaxed — a little time indoors looking at art, then fresh air, space to walk and somewhere peaceful to slow down.
An Afternoon We Both Enjoyed
Melbourne has many larger and more famous galleries, but Heide has a different kind of charm.
It feels personal and unhurried.
I loved being somewhere surrounded by art, and I loved even more that it was something my child could enjoy in their own way too.
We may not remember every artwork we saw that day.
But I think we’ll remember the feeling of walking through the galleries, finding sculptures among the trees and spending a quiet afternoon doing something we both love.
It was one of those simple afternoons that felt special without trying too hard.
