A Sculpture Garden of Unexpected Moments Among the Trees
When family came to visit us in New York, we started looking for somewhere a little different to spend the day.
By then, we had already been to many of the places everyone comes to New York to see — Times Square, Central Park, Coney Island, and the other familiar landmarks. This time, we wanted to venture a little farther out of the city and find somewhere that felt less expected.
A friend mentioned a place in Hamilton, New Jersey called Grounds For Sculpture. They had been there before and told us it was worth visiting, so one day we decided to make the trip.
I didn’t know quite what to expect.
What I remember most are the enormous sculptures scattered throughout the grounds — figures towering over us, some seeming almost as large as buildings. There were also remarkable three-dimensional interpretations of scenes from famous paintings, transformed from something you might normally see framed on a museum wall into life-sized, or larger-than-life, worlds you could almost step inside.
Years later, those images still return to me from time to time.
Perhaps what made the place so memorable was that it never really felt like visiting an exhibition.
Instead of walking quietly from one gallery room to another, we wandered through gardens, along paths and beneath trees, never quite knowing what we might discover around the next corner. Part of the fun was simply finding the sculptures — tucked beside a pond, appearing between trees or suddenly standing in an open field.
At times, walking deeper into the wooded areas, the atmosphere became almost mysterious. A sculpture would appear unexpectedly through the trees, and for a moment it felt as though we had wandered into another world.
There was something wonderfully playful about the experience, but also something strangely peaceful.
I visited before I had children, when a day trip like this was simply an opportunity to explore somewhere new. Now, years have passed and life looks very different. I have children of my own, and when I think about Grounds For Sculpture, I often imagine returning there with them — watching them run along the garden paths and seeing what catches their attention first.
Some places are memorable because they are famous. Others stay with you for reasons that are harder to explain.
For me, Grounds For Sculpture is one of those places.
It is somewhere I would love to visit again — and perhaps an especially lovely escape when you have already seen the usual New York sights and want a day that feels a little more unexpected.
Whether you are exploring on your own, visiting as a couple, or looking for somewhere special to spend a day with family, it is the kind of place that can make an ordinary outing feel like a small adventure.
And years later, you may still find yourself remembering a giant figure somewhere among the trees.
