Along the Pacific Coast in Malibu
There is something about leaving the busy streets of Los Angeles behind and following the Pacific Coast Highway toward Malibu.
The city slowly begins to loosen its grip.
Buildings become fewer, the ocean appears beside the road, and suddenly the journey feels less like getting somewhere and more like simply being on the way.
Malibu is one of those places where the drive itself becomes part of the memory.
Where the Road Meets the Pacific
The Pacific Coast Highway runs beside the ocean, sometimes close enough that the water seems almost within reach.
On one side are hills and homes tucked into the landscape.
On the other, the Pacific stretches toward the horizon.
It is the kind of road that makes you want to slow down.
Not because there is nowhere to go, but because there is suddenly so much to notice — the changing colour of the water, surfers waiting beyond the waves, sunlight catching the cliffs and small beaches appearing between bends in the road.
For a while, Los Angeles feels very far away.
A Different Kind of California
Malibu is famous for beautiful homes and celebrity residents, but that isn’t necessarily what makes it memorable.
The quieter moments are often better.
Walking along the beach.
Stopping somewhere just because the view looks beautiful.
Watching the waves roll beneath Malibu Pier.
Or simply sitting for a while with the Pacific in front of you and nowhere you need to be next.
There is a simplicity to it.
Ocean, sky, road and time.
Sometimes that is enough.
Take the Long Way
Travel can easily become a list.
See this. Visit that. Take a photograph and move on.
Malibu feels better when you do the opposite.
Leave some space in the afternoon.
Drive without trying to fit too much in.
Pull over when somewhere catches your eye. Walk along the sand. Stay until the light begins to soften.
The coastline has a way of making an ordinary afternoon feel longer.
And perhaps that is part of the reason people remember California road trips so fondly.
It isn’t always one particular destination that stays with you.
Sometimes it is simply the road beside the ocean.
When the Afternoon Begins to Fade
Late afternoon may be Malibu at its best.
The sunlight becomes warmer, shadows begin to stretch across the hills, and the Pacific slowly changes colour.
There is something peaceful about watching the day disappear here.
No grand moment is required.
Just the sound of the waves, the fading California light and the feeling that, for a little while, there is nowhere else you need to be.
Years later, it may not be every beach or every stop that you remember.
It may simply be the feeling of driving beside the Pacific, with the windows down and the ocean stretching endlessly beside you.
Sometimes, it’s the slow, unplanned moments that stay with us the longest.
